The 2009 Subaru Forester requires SAE 5w-30 or 5w-20 fully synthetic engine oil with a capacity of 4.4 quarts. You can buy this oil in one-quart containers from most retail stores, auto shops, and online, typically priced between $3 to $12 per bottle. A complete oil change will require 4 bottles of oil. To change the oil, start by draining the old oil from the nozzle valve at the bottom of the oil pan. Then, remove the cap on the top of the engine, use a funnel to pour in all 4 quarts of fresh oil, replace the cap, and close the hood.

The 2009 Subaru Forester should use 5W-30 oil for optimal performance. To check the correct oil grade, look for either the API Service or ILSAC Certification marks on the oil container. The engine oil capacity of the 2009 Subaru Forester is 4.2 US quarts (4.0 liters).
