Should your Ford Escape's battery die, you can still start the car by placing the key fob on the right side of the steering column next to the picture of a key. Hold it there, then press the brake and push the engine start button as you normally would. However, keep in mind that as the battery in the key fob wears out, its range and signal strength may decrease. If you find that the remote key is not functioning properly – such as being unable to unlock or start the car – it's likely time to replace the battery.

The only method that was effective was when I placed the key fob in the small tray beneath the air conditioning controls in the middle console.

You may need to experiment with how you position the key fob. I found that mine works best when the white side is facing up, with the top of the fob facing me and the buttons pointing towards me. Make sure the fob is touching the antenna icon on the steering column for it to work properly.
