Resetting the check engine light on your Dodge Ram 2500 truck is a simple process that can be completed in about 3 to 6 minutes. Begin by going to the front of your vehicle and opening the hood using the prop arm to secure it. Locate the battery at the front of the engine bay and disconnect the black cable (negative terminal). Reconnect the cable securely and close the hood. Return to the driver's seat, start the engine, and check your dashboard to confirm that the check engine light has been reset.

Which battery is located on the left side of the car, the side where the driver sits, or on the right side where the passenger sits?

Pop the hood, locate the battery, and unhook the black/negative cable. Give it around 20 minutes, then reconnect the black/negative cable. This should reset the check engine light.

What if it reset, and as you drive further down the road, the issue reappears?

I have a Dodge truck with dual batteries, and I recently disconnected and reconnected both of them after letting them sit for a minute. When I turned the key, the check engine light flashed for about 15 seconds before staying on steadily. I repeated this process twice with the same outcome. I also attempted to remove the PCM fuse and turn the ignition key to the first position, but the check engine light still flashed for 15 seconds before staying steady. Unfortunately, these troubleshooting steps did not solve the issue.

Performing a thorough reset could potentially help in resetting all sensors.

How can I resolve the issue with the check engine light displaying error code P2609?

  • Gunny Young

Not sure I'd go for that. Back in 2018, I had to swap out batteries on my 2500 in under 5 minutes and ended up losing all the transmission software updates. This caused some rough shifting. Had to take it back to the dealer to reprogram the transmission. Reminds me of the simpler times when trucks didn't rely so heavily on computers.
