X3s come with all-wheel drive (AWD) instead of four-wheel drive (4x4).

Of course! You can do it. I own a 2005 BMW X3 2.5I. To turn off the light, make sure all doors are closed, start the car, turn the wheel fully left and then fully right, straighten out the steering wheel, and the light will go off.
