To begin resetting the Engine Control Unit (ECU) of a 2012 Honda Civic, you'll first need to use a fuse puller or tweezers. If you decide to use your girlfriend's eyebrow tweezers, make sure to clean off any grease before returning them. The initial step involves driving a few laps around your neighborhood to warm up the engine. Once done, park your car, pop the hood, and locate the ECU fuse in the fuse box. Gently pull out the ECU fuse with the tool you have chosen. Wait for about 15 minutes before reinserting the fuse. If you prefer, you can also disconnect the battery for ten minutes and then reconnect it, but this method only puts the ECU in standby mode. The hard reset method of pulling the fuse clears the memory more effectively. After waiting 15 minutes for the fuse reset, turn on the ignition and let the engine idle for 20 minutes without pressing the gas pedal. Avoid using any accessories during this time. After the idle period, turn off the ignition, then back on immediately. This process completes the ECU reset. Drive the vehicle normally afterward, and it may take a full tank of gas for the system to establish new performance settings.
To reset or refresh the ECM or computer in your 2012 Honda Civic, start by disconnecting the positive battery cable and removing the ECU relay or fuse. Wait for two to three minutes before reinserting the fuse and reconnecting the battery cables. This should reset your vehicle's ECM.
