Most newer Ford Escape models come with "Intelligent 4WD", which allows the vehicle to automatically switch to 4WD when it detects a loss of traction in the front or rear tires while in two-wheel drive mode. This feature is marketed by Ford as being useful in various challenging terrains like mud, snow, or hills. Personally, I prefer the option to control when my AWD/4WD is engaged, but everyone has different preferences. Although the Ford system adds new sensors that could potentially malfunction, it takes away the guesswork involved in getting stuck.
