If you have a newer Ford Explorer with Intelligent 4WD, the vehicle will automatically decide when to use the extra wheels based on traction and torque, so you won't need to do much. If you want to manually switch your Explorer to 4WD, you can do so easily by locating the lever or knob that indicates 2WD, Auto, 4WD Low, or 4WD High. Simply come to a stop, move the lever or knob to your preferred setting, and the drivetrain will take care of the rest. Once you start moving again, the selected wheels will engage, and you'll be ready to go.
