To replace the transmission fluid, start by ensuring the car is parked on a level surface and opening the hood. Locate the transmission fluid reservoir, which is typically near the transmission, and find the dipstick. Remove the dipstick, clean it, reinsert it, and then pull it out again to check the fluid level. Take note of the amount indicated on the dipstick and the volume needed to fill the reservoir. Use a funnel to slowly add fluid until it reaches the fill line, making sure not to overfill. Once the level is correct, securely close the reservoir. Your vehicle is now ready for use.

Agreeing to Laura J with some conditions: The filter is located within the transmission oil pan. If you plan on changing it, be prepared for additional complexity. There's no requirement to remove it unless you're experiencing issues with shifting, although the filter may not necessarily be the culprit.

The 2005 Toyota RAV4's transmission requires 4 quarts of ATF IV fluid for a relatively simple fluid change. You just need to unscrew the drain plug on the transmission to release the old fluid, replace the plug, swap in a new filter, and refill with fresh fluid.
