To reset the transmission on a BMW E46 in the United States, first turn off the vehicle and remove the key. If you have a traditional blade key, insert it into the ignition and turn it to the second position without starting the car. For those with a key fob, insert it and press the Start Stop button without starting the car, making sure your foot is not on the brake. All dashboard lights will illuminate, at which point press and hold the accelerator pedal all the way down for 30 seconds. Release the pedal after 30 seconds, press the Start Stop button again, and remove the key. Finally, open and close the driver's door. This process will reset the transmission.
