To check the transmission fluid in a 2006 Toyota Tacoma, it's a straightforward process similar to other vehicles. Simply open the hood, locate the transmission fluid dipstick on the driver's side near the battery with its red handle, pull it out, wipe it clean, reinsert it, then pull it out again to check the level. If it's low, add some more; if not, you're all set. It's a good idea to check all your engine fluid levels when the vehicle is cold and hasn't been running recently.

The 2006 Tacoma does not come with a transmission dipstick, so you'll have to bring it to a dealership or a mechanic. There's a drain plug method where you remove the plug when the truck is warm and idling, then add fluid until it overflows before replacing the plug. I recommend leaving that task to the professionals. In summary, second-generation Tacomas do not have a transmission dipstick, and the automatic transmission fluid is recommended for up to 100,000 miles.

To check the transmission fluid level on a 2006 Toyota Tacoma, you will need to insert a dipstick into the transmission and then pull it out to see the fluid level.

I bought a Chilton manual like I always do when I get a new vehicle to help me with servicing and repairs. My 2006 Toyota Tacoma V6 with a 5-speed automatic transmission doesn't have a dipstick, but the manual showed me where the fill plug, drain plug, and check plug are located. If you're just draining the ATF or replacing the transmission filter and pan gasket, use the drain plug. Tighten the drain plug, then remove the fill plug and check plug. Start pumping ATF fluid into the transmission through the fill plug hole until it flows out of the check plug hole. Reinstall the check plug, start the engine, and let it warm up at an idle. With the engine running, remove the check plug and add more ATF through the fill plug hole if needed until it comes out of the check plug hole. Once fluid starts coming out, stop adding ATF and let it flow out of the check plug hole before sealing it with the check plug and fill plug. Make sure to check for leaks and the ATF fluid level regularly by removing the check plug while the engine is idling. You're all set.

My 2006 Tacoma has a dipstick to check the transmission fluid level. I believe this feature is available in all four-cylinder models, but not in the six-cylinder ones.
