To open the hood of a BMW X5, the steps may slightly change depending on the model year. Before 2012, simply pull the handle in the driver's footwell and then locate and pull the release handle under the hood to open it. For models newer than 2012, pulling the driver's footwell handle twice should release the hood, eliminating the need for a secondary handle. This modification by BMW was implemented to simplify the process of opening the hood.
