The transmission fluid in a 2006 Ford Explorer should ideally be replaced every 25,000 to 40,000 miles and inspected more frequently. Neglecting this maintenance can result in issues like overheating and damage to the transmission. Considering the high cost of transmission replacement, it's crucial to prioritize its care. Refilling the transmission fluid in a 2006 Ford Explorer can be a bit tricky due to the unique fill plug design. To add fluid to the transmission, you have to use a special adapter to screw into the plug at the bottom. Only then can you pump in the fluid. I learned this the difficult way.

The transmission has a filler opening located at the top. Simply unscrew it and pour in enough fluid until it reaches the designated fill line.
