To reset the ECU on a 2002 Nissan Maxima, you'll need to start by disconnecting the negative terminal of the battery. Begin by releasing the hood latch from inside the car, then step outside to open the hood. Locate the battery in the front corner of the engine compartment on the passenger side. You'll need a 10-millimeter socket and ratchet or wrench to turn the nut on the battery terminal counterclockwise just enough to disconnect the cable. Leave the battery disconnected for around 10 minutes, then tighten the cable back up. Insert the key into the ignition, turn it to the on position, and wait for about a minute. The vehicle will go through a cycle of various components, which will effectively reset the ECU.
