Ford is pulling back 6,146 Escape SUVs from the 2013 model year due to a potential issue with the 1.6-liter four-cylinder engines that could lead to an engine coolant leak. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration warns that if the leaked coolant evaporates on the hot engine, there is a risk of fire. The cylinder head cup plug may get dislodged, causing a significant loss of coolant. To address this, dealers will secure the existing plug and install an additional cover plug. The recall reference number for Ford is 12S39.

I own a 2013 Escape that had a coolant leak problem fixed under an extended warranty in 2018. Unfortunately, the leak reappeared around four months ago. I reached out to Ford in the hopes that they will assist me with resolving this issue once more.

I dealt with the same issue back in 2018 with my 2013 Ford Escape SEL. I didn't realize it was a known problem back then. Fortunately, I had bought an extended warranty, so I took it to the Ford dealership for nearly 2 months for repairs. Now, in 2021, the issue has resurfaced. The coolant reservoir is leaking into the engine area, and as I wait for a solution, I'm diligently monitoring the coolant every two weeks. It's incredibly frustrating, to say the least.
