The Chevy S-10's 2.2 liter 4-cylinder engine comes with a manual transmission that requires 4.2 pints of 5W-30 fluid. It is recommended to have a transmission flush and filter change done every 30,000 to 50,000 miles. Check the fluid levels when the transmission temperature reaches 120 degrees. Place a drain pan beneath the vehicle and transmission, and then use a 6 mm socket to remove the drain plug. Let the fluid drain while the engine is running. If the fluid is darker or black, it's time to flush and replace it. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface for proper draining. Use a 10 mm socket to remove the cover/pan and access the filter housing. Switch off the engine, then remove the two bolts that secure the fill plug behind the front wheel. Refill the transmission using a funnel.
