The "check engine" light in the Ford Escape signals that the car's internal diagnostics have noticed problems like an exhaust leak, misfires, or timing issues that should be addressed by a service technician. This warning light will either flash if the issue is serious or stay on steadily if it's less urgent. To reset it, you will need an OBDII scanner to clear the engine codes, although in less serious cases, disconnecting and reconnecting the positive battery cables might work. A flashing light typically means there is unburned fuel in the exhaust system, which can lead to overheating and damage to the catalytic converter. On the other hand, a faulty spark plug could also cause the light to flash, which should be fixed promptly. Additionally, issues like O2 sensor failure, a failing battery, or alternator problems can trigger the "check engine" warning. Car shops should be able to use an OBDII scanner to identify and resolve these problems.

To reset the display in front of you, turn the ignition to the on position without starting the car and press down firmly on both the brake and gas pedals simultaneously for around 30 seconds.

Pressing on the pedals for 30 seconds doesn't seem to be effective. Do you have any other recommendations for troubleshooting the issue with the 2008 Escape Hybrid?

Unhook the battery ground connection and ensure the connector is kept away from the negative battery terminal. Take a jumper wire, leaving the clamp attached to the battery positive terminal, and connect it to the negative clamp that you detached from the battery. Allow it to sit for 10 minutes to discharge all sensors and receivers in the vehicle, resetting any warning lights and messages. Alternatively, you can use an OBDII tool to reset any faults.

First, insert the key and switch it to the "on" position. Then, press the brake pedal a few times until the warning light on the 2015 Ford Escape SE turns off.

It's time for a tune-up, an oil change, or maybe even both, you simple-minded individual.
