The steps to reset the security system on a 2001 Toyota 4Runner are the same as for the 2000 model. If you're not familiar with how the anti-theft system works, it is connected to the power lock system. When you use your keyless entry remote to lock the doors, the alarms activate. If you replace the car's battery, the system will be disabled and will need to be reset. Fortunately, the process is straightforward. Insert the physical key into the ignition and turn it to the "on" position. Then, find the valet switch near the hood release, located on the driver's side of the dashboard. Quickly toggle the switch on and off three times. You should hear a short chirping noise from the alarm system. Next, press and hold the unlock/lock button on the key fob. Listen for a long beep and release the button once you hear it. Toggle the valet switch on and off quickly again. Turn the key in the ignition to the "off" position, remove it, and lock the doors using the remote to confirm that the system has been successfully reset. You're all set!
