If you have a mechanical speedometer in your Chevrolet Silverado, start by opening the truck's hood and locating the transmission. Disconnect the speedometer cable from the tail shaft and remove the bolt holding the gear housing cover. Take off the plate and count the teeth on the drive gear. Measure from the top of the Silverado's wheels to the center and multiply that by two. Divide 20,168 by the tire's diameter to calculate the revolutions per mile. Multiply the revolutions per mile by the number of teeth on the drive gear you counted earlier. Then, multiply this result by the Silverado's axle ratio, which can be found in the vehicle's documentation. Divide the final result by 1,001. Reach out to GM to get the necessary gear for your Silverado, which may be available aftermarket but ensure it's compatible with your specific Silverado model year. Install the new drive gear to recalibrate your speedometer.

To reset a speedometer, you need to determine the distance to drive to reset it. Tap and hold the ignition button while pressing the speedometer, then start and release the button. Press the button again and adjust to the manufacturer's specified size. Once you have driven the specific distance, press the button one more time.
