To reset the engine control module (ECM) in a Chevrolet Silverado 1500, you can simply disconnect the negative battery terminal for an extended period. There is no complex reset procedure; all you need to do is cut off power long enough for the ECM to reset when power is restored. Since internal capacitors retain some charge after disconnecting the terminal, it's advisable to turn on the headlights and let the truck sit for 10 to 15 minutes before reconnecting. Some mechanics suggest briefly touching the positive and negative battery cables together (WHILE DISCONNECTED!) to speed up the process, while others believe this is ineffective. If you're patient, waiting out the full 15 minutes should also accomplish the reset.

To reset the ECU on a Chevy truck, start by loosening the nut on the negative battery cable using a socket set or wrench. Remove the cable from the battery and put it to the side. Turn on the headlights to ensure the ECU loses any remaining power. After about 10 minutes, turn off the headlights. Reattach the negative battery cable by following the steps in reverse order.
