To program a new key fob for your Chevy Malibu, follow these simple steps that you can easily do on your own. Start by ensuring all doors are closed, then insert your key into the ignition and turn it on and off before removing it. Press and hold the unlock button on the driver's door while inserting and removing the key from the ignition three times. Hold down the lock and unlock buttons on your new key fob until you hear two beeps from the car. Remember, if you prefer, you can also have the dealership program your key fob using their special tools.

Once you arrive at your Malibu, make sure to shut all the doors before you install a new key fob in a Chevy Malibu. Insert the key into the ignition and press down on the "unlock" button on the driver's side door while inserting and removing the key from the ignition three times. Let go of the "unlock" button. Repeat this process for any additional remotes.

Success! I successfully purchased a new key fob to replace a broken key holder that was holding the metal "shaft" in place. By carefully disassembling the new fob, removing the uncut shaft, and transferring the old cut shaft into the new fob, I was able to complete the task. I had to tap out the set pin that held the shaft in place, being cautious as the shaft holder is made of light metal. After inserting the old cut key shaft into the new fob and replacing the set pin, I followed the instructions on page 2-5 of the owner's manual to program the new key. Thankfully, I had a spare working key and fob on hand. The programming process involved inserting the working key into the ignition, turning it to the on position, then removing it. Immediately afterwards, I inserted the new key and turned it to the on position without starting the car, watching for the dash lights to change to indicate successful programming (I believe the seatbelt light turned solid red). I removed the new key to test it out. The total cost for the new fob was $25 from Amazon. Best of luck if you attempt this process!
