To put a newer model BMW 3 Series in neutral without the engine running, you should first give the vehicle power without starting the engine. Then, shift the gear to neutral and back twice. After that, move it to neutral a third time and hold it there for 5 to 10 seconds. This will disengage the transmission for 15 minutes or until you turn off the power to the vehicle. This process can be useful if you need to move the vehicle when it has a dead battery or other problems.

I own a 2003 BMW 325I that has been parked for around 18 months. When I put the key in the ignition and turn it, I can shift the stick through all the gears smoothly, but the car doesn't move freely. Right now, the battery is drained. Do I need to have a charged battery in the car for the transmission to shift into a position that allows the car to move in this older model? Thank you.
