To shift the Ford Explorer into neutral with a dead battery, gently tug and hold the interlock brake shift lever while moving the gear shift lever from park (P) to neutral (N). You might be wondering why a functioning car battery is so important to your vehicle's performance. Put simply, your car battery provides the electrical jolt necessary to activate electrical components, converts chemical energy into the electrical power that operates your car, and supplies voltage to the starter. It also maintains the stable voltage (or energy supply) that keeps your engine running smoothly. To suggest that the car battery is not a crucial component of your vehicle would be a severe understatement.

To shift the car into neutral, step on the brake pedal, turn the ignition to the "on" position, let go of the brake, and move the gear shift to neutral.

Apply the parking brake and turn off the ignition. Open the small front storage compartment and take off the rubber protective cover. Use a screwdriver (or a similar tool) to carefully pry out and remove the cover for the bsi connection. Find the interlock brake shift lever across from the shifter assembly. Press the brake pedal down. Carefully pull and keep holding the interlock brake shift lever while moving the gear shift lever from position P (park) to position N (neutral). Make a cover to access the bsi. Press the brake pedal, start the vehicle, and release the parking brake.

In fact, after removing the plastic cover located behind the steering wheel, you will see a white, circular lever at the bottom. Using pliers, you can pull down on this lever to move a pin down on the side, enabling you to shift the car into any gear you desire, even neutral. It took some effort to dissect the process, but now I am aware for the future.
