To take off the skid plate of a Toyota 4Runner, start by removing the five 10-millimeter bolts and one fastener that secure the upper plastic shield between the metal skid plate and the bumper. There are three bolts close to the bumper and two near the skid plate. Use a flat screwdriver to pry out the fastener and take off the cover. Then, with a 12-millimeter socket, undo the four bolts on the skid plate - two at the front and two at the back. It may help to have someone assist you when taking out the last bolt to support the plate and prevent it from falling on your face. You may need to wiggle the plate a bit to remove it from the vehicle.
