If you are thinking about replacing the power steering pump on your 2005 Ford Freestyle, it is recommended that you first inspect your radiator. A clogged radiator can often exhibit similar symptoms to a failing power steering pump. It is easier to fix, so it is advisable to check it first. If you have confirmed that the power steering pump is the issue, you can replace it by first removing the fluid reservoir and replacing the seals upon reinstallation. Next, drain the cooling system and take off the drive belt and belt tensioner. Use a block of wood to cushion the impact when jacking up the vehicle from the oil pan. Remove the engine mount, lift the engine to reach the power steering pulley, and detach the pulley by taking out the three bolts. Disconnect the lines from the power steering pump and raise the front of the vehicle. Remove the splash shields on the passenger's side, and unbolt the AC compressor while keeping the lines connected. Take out the radiator hose to gain access to unbolting the pump and removing it. Follow the reverse steps for installation, ensuring you replace the seals with new ones whenever you remove them.
