It's pretty easy to take out and swap the tail lights on a Toyota Matrix, all thanks to the convenient trim panels that Toyota put in place for easier access. Begin by removing the trim panel at the back of the hatch, secured in position by a tab. Once you've got access, there are three bolts securing the tail light housing. Use a socket or ratcheting wrench to loosen the three nuts on the mounting bolts. Usually, they're 10mm on most years. After removing the nuts, gently pry the tail light housing away from the car body. Remember to disconnect the electrical connectors first to avoid any damage.

To take out the Toyota Matrix taillights, first unscrew the two screws holding the taillight in place using a Phillips screwdriver. Then twist the bulb and socket to the left, disconnecting the taillight assembly from the rear.

Here's a rephrased version: When working on your Toyota Highlander, you'll need to access the back to remove the tail lights from your Toyota Matrix. Look for the two screws holding the tail light in place and use a Phillips screwdriver to unscrew them. Turn the bulb socket to the left to release it, then remove the entire tail light assembly from the rear.
