The Ford Explorer's automatic 4WD feature is constantly active unless you are willing to adjust the wiring in the transfer case. The system automatically engages based on data from various sources like the ABS sensors, steering wheel angle, pedal position, wheel speeds, and acceleration rates. It determines the power distribution between the four wheels, swiftly switching between 2WD and 4WD when it detects hazardous road conditions or slipping. The Explorer also has the option to manually turn on and off 4WD High and 4WD Low modes. 4WD High is best for deep snow, mud, or sand, while 4WD Low is suitable for steep climbs or gravel roads. However, caution is advised when using these modes as they can strain the transfer case if not used correctly.

Certain models of Ford Explorer SUVs have the option to turn off the 4-wheel drive feature by unplugging the brown wire that connects to the transfer case. This will make the vehicle operate in rear-wheel drive mode only.
