The powertrain warning light in the Ford Ranger may illuminate briefly and then disappear after restarting the truck, indicating that the ECU has saved an error code signaling a potential problem with the transfer case or transmission. To clear the warning, it is recommended to have the truck scanned for specific error codes and address the issue. Some owners find that the warning goes away on its own after a restart, but this could be due to loose electrical harnesses in the engine compartment. For a safer resolution, getting a professional diagnosis is advisable.

You may notice that sometimes the ranger powertrain spanner light turns on and off by itself. This could be due to a faulty EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) sensor located in the middle of the engine manifold. To fix this issue, lift the plastic top cover and locate the plug for the sensor halfway down the top of the engine. Unplug it and then carefully unscrew the sensor from the manifold. Replace it with a new one, reconnect the plug, put the plastic cover back on, clear any faults, and that should resolve the problem. The fault code typically associated with this issue is normally p040d.
