To turn off the overdrive function on a Ford Explorer, simply press the OD off button typically found at the end of the gear shifter. When turned off, an illuminated "OD" light will be visible. To re-activate it, press the button again to turn off the light. Overdrive mode should be kept on for normal driving conditions as it allows for high gear utilization. However, it is recommended to switch it off when tackling steep hills, off-roading, driving in deep snow or mud, or when moving at slow speeds. Using high gear at highway speeds helps reduce transmission strain.
