To deactivate the ECT feature in a Toyota 4Runner, press the ECT button located above the headlight switch or on the center display, depending on the model year. ECT stands for electronically controlled transmission. Pressing this button will adjust the shift points, allowing you to achieve higher RPM levels before shifting gears. The ECT system uses hydraulics to control clutches and bands in the transmission, which are managed by an electronic solenoid. This function offers improved speed and handling control. It's particularly beneficial when driving in hilly terrain that requires more power, or when towing a heavy load or trailer.

Has anyone provided you with a helpful explanation? My 1998 Limited vehicle displayed the "ECT PWR" indicator in green on the dashboard for the first time. I am unable to locate a button to deactivate it, and the only special feature the mechanics who worked on my engine mentioned was the Rear Diff shift. Any suggestions on how to at least switch off the light? I really miss having an owner's manual in the glove box, how about you? 🤓

I drive a 1998 Toyota 4Runner, and today the ECT Power light turned on for the first time. I am unsure of its meaning or how to disable it, unless it is related to the overdrive button on my gear shift. Last night, as I was heading home from my daughter's house, I had to use the overdrive button a few times to help the car run smoothly and catch up with itself. It seems like the car is lacking gas or power. Can anyone advise me on what steps to take or avoid? Thank you.
