Modifying the rear differential fluid in a 2015 Toyota Highlander is a straightforward task that calls for a 10-millimeter Allen head socket, ratchet, drain pan, gear oil, and crush washers. To find the service side of the differential, crawl under the vehicle in front of the rear passenger tire. Look for hex head bolts running along the outer edge, as well as two Allen head bolts. The lower Allen head bolt serves as the drain plug, while the one near the 9 o'clock position is the fill plug. Place the drain pan beneath the drain plug, remove it, and also take out the fill plug to hasten the draining process. Swap out the crush washers on both plugs and reinstall the drain plug once the fluid has fully drained. Refill with Toyota Genuine Differential Gear Oil LT 75W-85 GL-5 or a similar product until oil starts to emerge from the hole, which is approximately half a quart. Remember to reposition the fill plug securely.

To change the differential fluid, make sure to park on a flat surface. Take out the filler and drain plugs and fill it up until it's within 5mm from the bottom of the plug opening.
