To pop the hood on your Volvo V40, first, park on a flat surface and engage the parking brake. Locate the hood release handle beneath the left side of the dashboard and pull it. The hood will unlatch slightly. Then, shift the hood latch lever, located at the front edge of the hood, to the side and lift the hood open. After lifting the hood a bit, you can let go of the lever. Take the support rod out of the holder using the handle and place it under the hood. When you're ready to close the hood, take out the support rod, secure it back in the holder, and gently lower the hood. Lower the hood to about 12 inches (30 cm), remove your hands, and let the hood close.

How about the second latch? The one by the windshield that prevents the hood from opening beyond six inches?

My safety latch stopped the hood from opening. A way to fix this is to use a stick to maneuver a thin rope around the latch, close the hood almost all the way, and then pull both ends of the rope from the driver's side (UK). However, bending the fixed bracket to disable this safety feature is not a safe solution. It is best to have it checked by a professional at a dealership.

When you want to open the hood, just turn the handle in the car to the right and push the latch on the front grille to the left. The release handle is usually located near the driver's left foot. Turn the handle about 20-25 degrees to the right and you'll feel the hood release.
