If the rear trunk light of your Ford Escape continues to remain illuminated even after closing the power liftgate, it likely means that the liftgate is not properly latching and signaling to the car that it is closed. In such a case, you may need to either replace the lock actuator or realign the liftgate. The estimated cost for labor to replace the lock actuator is between $60 and $80, with parts costing $220 to $230. To address the realignment issue, reference technical service bulletin 18-2135, particularly for 2017 model year vehicles produced before September 1, 2017. The bulletin provides instructions to adjust the striker wings and reinstall the striker bumpers using Torx T25, a ratchet, adjustable wrench, and vernier caliper.

Find the light switch for the back door, pull it out - it's a push-in type switch. Disconnect it and cover the wire with tape to turn off the rear lights, then reinsert the switch into place.
