The typical price range to have a trailer hitch installed on a Subaru Outback by a professional is between $300 and $400. If you opt to do the installation yourself, you will need basic tools such as screwdrivers, 10mm and 11/16" sockets, a 6" socket extension, a torque wrench, a 1" hole saw, exhaust pliers, and a drill. To begin, you must first support the exhaust system before using the pliers to lower the exhaust and remove the isolator rods. Using the 10mm socket, remove the heat shields, then drill access holes into the frame on both sides to insert carriage bolts. Afterwards, position the hitch and attach the required washers and bolts, tightening each hex nut to 50 lb-ft using the torque wrench. Lastly, trim and reattach the heat shields before reattaching the exhaust system. For a 2018 model, the recommended trailer hitches should have a maximum tongue weight of approximately 675 lbs and a trailer weight of 4,000 lbs.
