For the 2006 Toyota Matrix, it is recommended to use Toyota Genuine Motor Oil, specifically an ILSAC multigrade engine oil with a viscosity rating of SAE 5W-30. If this viscosity isn't available, you can temporarily use SAE 10W-30, but make sure to switch back to SAE 5W-30 at the next oil change. It's important to regularly check the oil level, ideally every time you refuel. To do this, pull out the dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert it, then pull it out again to inspect where the oil level falls between the MIN and MAX marks. If it's below the MIN mark, add enough oil to bring it back within the recommended range.
