You can easily swap out the VCT solenoid in a 2009 Ford F-150 5.4 by removing the valve cover to access the retaining screw. In newer models, the solenoid design has been updated to boost oil pressure. To check if the solenoids are faulty, measure the ohms between the pins, with values ideally falling between 5 to 15 ohms for good condition. Larger readings indicate a solenoid problem. It's important to check that the screens are undamaged too, as this could cause issues. Properly maintaining your solenoids is key to ensuring optimal performance from your vehicle.

My F-150 truck from 2009 with a 5.4-liter engine has a different size bolt for the VCT solenoid retainer screw. Instead of a 25mm Torx, it requires a 10mm bolt head. To remove the retainer bolt, you'll need to take off the valve cover.
