When the USB port on your Subaru Outback is not functioning properly, the initial step to take is to reset the head unit. USB connectivity issues are typically caused by software problems, and performing a head unit reset can often resolve these issues. If the problem persists after the reset, the next course of action is to inspect the physical port for any signs of damage, debris, or bent pins. If any of these issues are present, repair or replacement will be necessary. Lastly, ensure that the wiring behind the port is securely connected and free of fraying.

USB connectivity problems in the Subaru Outback might be the result of a blown fuse in the USB port.

I pushed the knobs on both sides of the radio along with the CD button simultaneously. This action reset the USB and should hopefully provide a long-term solution.

I have a 2021 VTech Impreza, so I looked online and thought the issue was fixed. The manual recommended using a FAT32 USB drive and that USB 2 technology would be sufficient. It seemed a bit outdated, but I went along with it. I found a rarely used 2GB drive, formatted it using Windows XP, and found an appropriate USB as per the manual. I was optimistic it would work, but encountered the same problem. Occasionally the USB audio would play right away, but most of the time I received a "USB device not recognized" message. I cleaned everything thoroughly, but it didn't make a difference. The only way I could get the audio to work was by removing and re-inserting the USB, sometimes multiple times. I tried another 4GB stick and encountered the same issue, which was frustrating. Finally, I decided to get a new 32GB drive and formatted it to FAT32 using Windows 10 in a USB 3 slot, and it worked perfectly every time.

You could attempt using a 32-gigabyte USB drive that is formatted as FAT32 in a USB 3.0 port.

At first, I encountered difficulties, but then I gave it another go with a ScanDisk 3.0 128. I inserted it first and then started the car. It loaded promptly and began playing. Excited about the 2024 Outback Wilderness. Hooray!
