To prepare for a trip, it's a good idea to update the maps on your Toyota Highlander's navigation system before heading out on a new adventure. This will ensure you have accurate directions for unfamiliar routes. The process is straightforward and quick. Simply remove the SD card from your vehicle and insert it into your desktop computer. Once your computer recognizes the card, use Toyota's Map Update Toolbox. If there is an update available, you'll see a button to download the latest content. Click on this button to initiate the update. Once the process is complete, the toolbox will confirm that the SD card is up to date. You can then remove the SD card from your computer and insert it back into your vehicle. Your navigation maps should now be successfully updated.

To upgrade the navigation system in a Toyota Highlander, start by signing in to the map update toolbox. Look for a button on the menu located on the left side of the screen. If there is a new update, you will see the button labeled as "updates." Click on the updates option to proceed if it is available.

That's not accurate. In order to get the latest maps for the Highlander, you need to visit the dealership and pay for a "labor" fee. The Yaris is able to have the maps downloaded, unlike the higher-end Highlander models.

After experiencing problems with the Navigation system, I recently visited my dealership where they informed me that there are no updates available, which strikes me as very strange. It's been almost 4 years since I bought the vehicle and the lack of updates explains why the system keeps leading me astray. It's frustrating to be advised to rely on my phone considering the significant amount I paid for the vehicle.

You can buy an SD card upgrade for approximately $40 on Amazon for models up to 2019. The update is usually a year behind, meaning a 2023 card will actually be for 2022. Still, it's an improvement over the outdated 2014 card I was using until I replaced it this week.
