In 2009, the Toyota Matrix does not require power steering fluid for operation. Proper steering function is essential for maneuvering on the road, such as changing lanes. However, over time, issues may arise. The vehicle may veer to one side or the steering wheel could become unresponsive. A loose steering pump can lead to car trouble and potentially dangerous situations. Problems such as bad strut bearings or a faulty rack mount may also occur. It is recommended to change the power steering fluid every 75,000 miles or so. Besides fluid replacements, you may hear odd noises coming from the steering components. A loose or defective bearing will produce unpleasant sounds that can be quite disturbing.
