The 2011 Chevy Silverado is equipped with active fuel management, allowing its V8 engine to switch to "V4" mode by deactivating four cylinders to improve fuel efficiency during light load conditions like lower speeds or no towing. This results in 5.5 to 7.5 percent better fuel economy. To achieve this, half of the cylinders are shut down by not allowing the exhaust valve to open, followed by a closed exhaust stroke and then preventing the intake valve from opening. Some drivers avoid using this feature due to common lifter failure issues, opting instead to run the V8 engine continuously. To deactivate the system, you can opt for either an AFM Delete Kit to replace components with standard parts or an AFM Disabler device that plugs into the OBD-II port to stop signal transmission to the ECU for mode switching.
