In 2015, Ford made the F-150 Lariat, King Ranch, and Platinum models with push-button start instead of using keys. These push-button start cars operate with a keyless ignition system. Although there are variations in the systems used across the different models, they share the common feature of replacing the conventional metal key with a key fob. The key fob needs to be inside the car for the car's computer system to connect with it, enabling the driver to start the car by simply pushing a button. The key fob acts as a transmitter that sends a unique low-frequency signal to the car. Once the fob is inside the car and the driver presses the button, the car's receiver detects the signal, allowing power to be sent to start the engine.

The Ford F150 Lariat version and higher come with a factory-installed push button start feature. If you want a push button start on any other model, it will be an aftermarket addition that needs to be installed separately.
