All versions of the 2016 Kia Rio now come equipped with a timing chain instead of a timing belt. While earlier models from 2000 to 2011 and with specific engine types did use timing belts, Kia made the switch to timing chains for all other engines since then. Unlike timing belts that typically require replacement every 60,000 to 100,000 miles, timing chains, housed inside the engine and not exposed like belts, usually do not need to be changed unless there is a complete failure.
