The Toyota RAV4 is equipped with a timing chain in its engine. The debate as to whether a timing chain or a timing belt is superior is a common one. To begin with the benefits of a timing belt, it is a more cost-effective option to produce and buy due to its rubber material compared to the stainless steel material of a timing chain. Additionally, engines with timing belts tend to operate more quietly, eliminating the metal-on-metal noise often associated with older car models using timing chains. Conversely, a timing chain is known for its durability and longevity attributed to its metal construction. Some car manufacturers even claim that it may never need to be replaced with proper engine maintenance, particularly when using the correct type of oil.

It seems that it contains a chain. Despite some people's beliefs, it operates silently when lubricated with oil. Chains are preferable to belts because they can endure for the entire lifespan of the engine.

My 2017 Rav4 - does it have a Timing Belt or Timing Chain?

My own encounters with this issue involved two instances of timing belts failing while the vehicles were in motion. Interestingly, I've never had a timing chain break in the same way. The cost of labor to replace a timing belt can really take you by surprise!

I owned a late 1980s minivan. The timing belt broke on Highway 99 near Tulare. I had it fixed at a shop in Tulare, and they replaced the belt and mentioned that I was fortunate.

Dave Henderson's statement isn't entirely accurate. In some cases, when a timing belt in an engine breaks, as long as it's not in an "interference" motor, you can simply replace the belt, align the timing, and continue driving. On the other hand, a timing chain in an engine can typically last the entire lifespan of the engine with regular oil changes. However, if you have an interference motor, whether it's equipped with a timing belt or chain, the outcome could result in significant engine damage. The valves may collide with the pistons, causing holes in the pistons and bending the valves.

I think that if your timing belt breaks while you're driving, it can cause serious damage to your engine and end up costing a lot to repair. If your vehicle has a belt, it's a maintenance task you should budget for, even if it seems to be in good condition. On the other hand, if you have a chain, you can keep driving until it fails. Repairs are still costly, but they won't ruin your engine. Plus, a chain is likely to last longer than your engine.
