The base model 2015 Ford Escape doesn't come with a CVT, but it has an SRX automatic transmission. However, the Ford Escape Hybrid for that year does come with a CVT. Signs of transmission issues may include rough idling, engine vibrations, sluggishness while driving, and grinding noises. You might also have trouble shifting gears. If the transmission fails, it will need to be replaced. Parts alone will cost between $248 and $984, and professional labor will add an extra $339 to $758 on top.

Feeling discouraged? The CVT, or continuously variable transmission, has a bad reputation, though newer versions have seen some improvement. The Toyota eCVT is considered one of the most reliable types of CVTs due to its use of planetary gears instead of belts or chains like older models. Despite the slightly better fuel efficiency, most car manufacturers have encountered issues with CVTs, leading some to abandon them completely. For example, the 2014 and newer models of the Compass and Jeep Patriots are exceptions. The main drawback of CVT transmissions is their poor reliability, with some failing in brand new vehicles with less than 60,000 miles on them. Keep in mind that repairing or overhauling a CVT transmission is a costly endeavor, ranging from $3,500 to $8,000, particularly for the higher-end models, and not a simple fix that can be done for a few hundred dollars.
