In the 2012 Chevy Malibu, there is a cabin air filter that helps keep pollen and road dust out of the cabin. Some models will have the filter behind the glove box, while others will have it under the hood connected to the climate control system. These filters should be replaced regularly, and they are relatively inexpensive at around $50. The filter under the hood is easy to access, but the one behind the glove box will require removing the box by unscrewing two bolts and releasing a couple of slide clips.

It had a cover that said “Cut on Dashed line to add filter,” so I used a box cutter to remove it. However, there was no filter inside once I opened it up.
