Ford has admitted that the APIM in the 2016 Ford F-150 may have issues, but there is no active recall at the moment. Typically, manufacturers issue recalls when they discover that the failure rate surpasses a certain threshold, prompting them to recall all affected vehicles to replace the faulty part. Ford has identified a problem with the APIM in some 2016 trucks, and instead of recalling them, they have issued a service bulletin. The bulletin states that they will extend the APIM warranty to five years and conduct free replacements, an improvement from the standard 3-year warranty. This assurance should alleviate any concerns about potential APIM failures.

Although there have been numerous cases of the apim module malfunctioning in 2016 Ford F150s, leading to the necessity of a replacement, no recall has been issued for this particular problem.

This morning, I logged in to share my story and frustrations with my 2020 Explorer ST. In December 2022, I got a free map upgrade, but I was never able to complete it because the system kept showing an error that the USB device was not supported. Fast forward to June 2023 and when I activated the hotspot, it caused a chain reaction of problems - WiFi, Bluetooth, Hotspot, FordPass, screen settings, ambient lighting all resetting to default every time I start the car. The system detects and downloads an update, but there's not enough memory to install it. The dealer suspects it's the APIM, but I believe it might be related to Sync 3.4 build 22251. The RW/DATA folder is not being managed properly and gets filled with old data that is no longer used. I plan to remove Grace note to see if that frees up enough memory for a downgrade or upgrade if a stable version is available. The dealer wanted to keep the car for 4 days, but that's not convenient for me since I rely on my car for work. They agreed to put me on the waitlist and continue driving it until they are ready to diagnose. The service manager mentioned that they have 60 cars with similar issues on their lot. I'll provide updates as things progress.
