In 2011, BMW offered the choice to add a spare tire to new X5 vehicles for an extra $150 at the time of purchase. Despite all '11 X5 models coming equipped with run-flat tires, BMW tried to convey that a spare tire was more of a luxury than a necessity through this additional charge. Personally, I find it a bit absurd to pay for something as essential as a spare tire, but life moves on. Many drivers have opted to acquire a spare tire nonetheless, although the cost can be steep, reaching up to $700 for a mounted tire. If your X5 has third-row seats, you won't have an underfloor compartment to stow the spare tire, so be prepared for it to occupy a significant portion of your cargo space.
