The 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier has been using a timing chain instead of a timing belt since 1988. One significant advantage of using a chain over a belt is that the chain is designed to last the entire lifespan of the vehicle, whereas a belt needs to be replaced periodically. The only main difference between the two is their location and material composition. Belts are located outside the engine and are more susceptible to wear, while chains are inside the engine and experience less wear. If a vehicle uses a timing belt, it should be replaced every 60,000 to 90,000 miles, whereas a timing chain typically only needs to be inspected around every 150,000 miles.
