The 2007 Lexus RX350 features a timing chain that links the crankshaft and camshaft. For optimal engine performance, the alignment of these two components must be precise. When the crankshaft rotates, it causes the chain to turn the camshaft, which in turn controls the opening and closing of the intake and exhaust valves. The intake valves allow the gas to enter the cylinder, where it is compressed by the piston, ignited by the spark plug, and burned by the coil. The exhaust valves then release the spent gases from the engine, which are eventually expelled through the muffler. With regular maintenance, the timing chain can outlast the vehicle itself and typically requires minimal servicing. The chain is housed within the engine and is located behind a sealed cover at the front of the engine.
