The 2009 Dodge Journey comes with either a 3.5L SOHC V6 engine with a timing belt or a 2.4L 4 Cylinder engine with a timing chain. The timing belts require periodic replacement, while the timing chains typically do not need to be changed as long as regular oil changes are performed. Belts need replacing because they are exposed outside the engine, whereas chains are protected inside and benefit from engine oil. For the Journey, it is recommended to replace the timing belt every 102,000 miles or every 102 months (8.5 years), whichever comes first. While the timing chain is designed to last the lifetime of the vehicle, it can still wear out. The cost of a new timing chain ranges from $50 to $110.

The 3.5-liter V6 engine uses a belt, while the small 4-cylinder engine uses a chain.

The 2009 Dodge Journey comes equipped with a timing belt and tensioner that should be changed at approximately 100,000 miles, as per Dodge's recommendation. It is strongly advised to also replace the water pump at the same time, since it would require significant labor if done separately from the timing belt replacement. Luckily, most auto parts stores offer a kit with all the necessary parts.
