Honda non-transponder keys are traditional metal keys without a chip, so they do not require programming. However, car key chips play a critical role in the ignition process. The microchip in the key responds to a signal from the car's computer when the key is turned, and if the coded signal from the chip matches with the car's computer, the engine will start. If the code is incorrect, the engine will not start. If you lose both the key and the fob, getting a replacement from a dealer can cost over $200, with prices varying based on the vehicle and key type. For example, a Lexus dealer quoted $370 for a new key, fob, and programming, while a BMW dealer mentioned that keyless fobs could cost up to $500, depending on the model.
In 2005, all Honda Civics come with a standard chipped key, which was first introduced by Honda for all its vehicles back in 2003.
